Differences between Ozempic and Wegovy

Ozempic and Wegovy contain semaglutide, but are not the same in terms of indication and treatment regimen. Confusion is common because both belong to the GLP-1 class.

The main difference

Ozempic is authorised for type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is formulated for weight management in eligible people. Doses, goals and monitoring may differ. For the complete guide to semaglutide, see semaglutide for weight loss.

Why should they not be chosen by name?

The doctor does not choose based only on the active substance. Diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, other treatments, contraindications, tolerability and the main goal all matter: glucose control, weight loss or both.

Risks of self-medication

Using these treatments without medical assessment is unsafe. Digestive reactions, hypoglycaemia risk in combination with certain diabetes treatments, gallbladder disease, pancreatitis and pregnancy need to be discussed. Also read Wegovy: side effects and monitoring.

Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro?

If the real question is which treatment suits your weight-management needs, the relevant comparison may be between semaglutide and tirzepatide. See Wegovy vs Mounjaro.

What should you discuss at the consultation?

Have your weight, height, treatments, medical history and recent tests ready. You can start with an online nutrition consultation to assess the options.
